Revealing the memorial of Eduard Goldstücker

Czech Centre Tel Aviv together with the Embassy of Czech Republic and the Embassy of Slovak Republic in Israel will ceremonially unveil the memorial of Eduard Goldstücker, the first ambassador to Czechoslovakia in Israel. The memorial is unveiled on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia. The memorial was designed by the artist Robert Vlasák.

Dr. Eduard Goldstücker

A great man. A venerable human being. A Czechoslovak and friend of Israel.

Born at May 30, 1913 in Podbiel, Slovakia and died at October 23, 2000 in Prague, Czech Republic.Goldstücker was raised in a jewish family in northern Slovakia. In 1948, he became Czechoslovakia’s first ambassador to Israel and played an important role in building relations between his country and the nascent State of Israel. Despite that, the Czechoslovak communist regime unjustly condemned Goldstücker to life imprisonment in the 1950s after an antisemitic show trial. When the political climate later eased, he was rehabilitated and worked in the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague until 1968.Due to his opposition to the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia he emigrated to Great Britain, where he became a professor of comparative literature in Sussex. He also lectured at universities in Los Angeles, Stockholm and Konstanz. His life’s story remains an inspiration for Israelis, Czechs and Slovaks to this day.
