Freedom and Democracy - The Velvet Revolution Memories

The Velvet Revolution culminated in November 1989. It ushered in the end of communist rule over then-Czechoslovakia, and the start of a free and democratic society and therefore this year, we celebrate 30 years of democracy. On this occasion we present you a special event called Freedom and Democracy, which will take on 28th November in Beit Yad LeBanim in Haifa.

Michael Žantovský

Michael Žantovský (born 1949, Prague) is a Czech diplomat, politician, author, journalist, lyricist and psychologist. He is a former Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United Kingdom, as well as to Israel and the United States. During the Velvet Revolution in 1989 he was among the founding members of the Civic Forum, the umbrella organization coordinating the overthrow of the communist regime, and became its press spokesman. In January 1990 he became the spokesman, press secretary and advisor to President Václav Havel.


Robert Mikoláš

Robert Mikoláš (1966) studied history and literature at PU UJEP, followed by further studies at Taipei University and the Goethe Institute in Munich. He worked at the Strahov Library of the Royal Canons of Premonstratensians, and at TV Prima, he also lectured at the College of International and Public Relations. Since 1998, he has been employed by The Czech Radio as a foreign correspondent focused on world conflicts (Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Kosovo, Zimbabwe, Algeria, Philippines, Burma, Israel). In 2002-2003 and 2006-2011 he worked as a Czech Radio Permanent Correspondent for China and the East and Southeast Asia. He has received a number of awards including Prix Bohemia and was twice nominated for the Journalist Award of the Czech Republic.


Barbora Berezňáková

Barbora Berezňáková is a video artist and filmmaker based in Bratislava, Slovakia and NYC, USA. She graduated at Film Faculty at University of Performing Art in Bratislava, also studied animation and video postproduction in BBAA UPV, Valencia, Spain and Digital filmmaking at NYFA in NYC. Barbora has been working on documentaries and videos for TV and various NGO productions, music videos and video art installations. Barbora is interested in experimenting with storytelling and cross-genres in film and video installation.
