Václav Havel’s Week

Czech Centre Tel Aviv, in partnership with the Embassy of the Czech Republic, the Municipality of Jerusalem, University of Tel Aviv, and the Israeli-Czech and Czech-Israeli Chambers of Commerce, co-organized a series of events commemorating the 25th anniversary of reestablishment of Czech-Israeli diplomatic relations, as well as the first visit to Israel by President Václav Havel. The events will be held in the presence and participation of the Minister of Culture Daniel Herman, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Michaela Marksová, the Minister of Regional Development Karla Šlechtová and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Israel Ivo Schwarz.

Václav Havel’s Week will be celebrated throughout Israel, beginning on Sunday, October 25 in Jerusalem, with the performance Antiwords by the Spitfire Company theater group.

The following day, October 26, a park in Jerusalem (not far from Masaryk street) will be named after Václav Havel. A tile with Havel’s autograph with his iconic little heart will be placed in the hall of glory in the legendary Jerusalem King David Hotel. Celebrations will then continue in Tel Aviv, where Michael Žantovský – the former Ambassador to Israel, current Director of the Václav Havel Library and a good friend of Václav Havel – will present his new book Havel: A Life. Czech Philharmonic Quartet will follow up with a chamber music concert.

Havel’s Place, a memorial dedicated to Václav Havel, designed by the architect and designer Bořek Šípek, will be unveiled at the Tel Aviv University in the presence of the artist and a number dignitaries on October 27. The aim of the project is to create a network of places in public spaces that will contribute to meetings and genuine dialogue – places where it will be possible to reflect and hold discussions in the spirit of the ideals and philosophy of Václav Havel.
